rough few days

Posted by Unknown at 8:23 PM
Yesterday was the peak of a few very rough days.  For the past two weeks Tyler's reflux has been playing up and getting worse and worse.  He is on 2x3ml Losec a day and it just didn't seem to be doing anything AT ALL!

It got to the point where he was waking up crying in pain on Thursday night and I only managed to get a maximum of 3 hours broken sleep. So I had to go to the pharmacy to get a new script as I don't have enough to last me over the christmas long weekend.  I thought hmm I will just have a quick chat to the pharmacist about it.  Well he was a rude little so and so! he wouldn't listen to anything I had to say just flatly said, he is on a higher dose than most adults and simply it just wouldn't stop working! Jerk!

Anyway I got worried then as Tyler's cough is pretty bad so I though hmm better take him to the Dr.  My normal GP is on holidays so I just went with anyone I could see.  Well this Dr nearly got a punch in the face! My 3 hours of sleep didn't help things.

He listened intently to what I had to say which was good. He then checked Tyler out who although being very tired was distracted by the new environment and man talking to him that he wasn't crying! Anyway the Dr proceeded to tell me that as he isn't projectile vomiting and loosing weight that he doesn't actually have reflux at all and that its colic! He then continued to say that because this is my first baby I don't really have any idea and thats why its all so confusing for me. Oh and then he went on to say that Drs only prescribe Reflux meds to babies to actually treat the parents as they need to feel like they are doing something to help their babies and to put it simply some babies just cry!!

OMG what a F**King MORON! Over eating and gaining too much weight is a sign of reflux too! So is coughing, and crying in pain, and burping wet burps, constantly spitting up, crewing acid in the mouth, not being able to lie on his tummy or back because he brings up acid inturn spitting up and that causes him more pain, frothing at the mouth, fussing at the boob, throwing his head back and arching his back etc etc!  but no this is just colic! Besides the fact that I told him the reflux meds had been working great it was only the last 2 weeks he has really started to go down hill again, and that I had seen a paediatrician about it and he changed Tyler's dose and also recommended starting him on Solids at 4 months! Yet he still insisted it was just colic and all babies just cough sometimes! AGH! Oh and thank you I can tell the difference between my sons cries of pain from reflux which is different to his colic cry and different from his tantrum cry! oh and don't let me forget that he also said that babies don't cry from reflux! hahahaha he was actually serious! Clearly he has never had any experience at all with a baby with reflux!

Anyway I came home and DH did some research whilst I was trying to put my crying in pain little man down for a nap.  DH found a thing from a paediatrician in the US that said that the severity of reflux peaks at around 4 months of age! OMG that explained it. How hard was it for a Dr to tell me this??? At least I can now hope for Tyler's sake that it starts to ease off for him a bit.  He may or may not be able to go off his meds but at least there is hope in sight.  Its truly horrible seeing him in so much pain!

Something else I thought of was that my other Dr had given me a trial of a different reflux med for myself, Somac because my current Zantac doesn't work for the full 24hours and I get in lots of pain for about 3-4hours leading up to my next dose. The Somac worked great so I was going to contact the Dr and get him to give me a script but I hadn't got around to it, I had no Zantac left so hadn't taken any of that and had just been putting up with the pain.  OMG I know why babies scream so much from it, it really does hurt like hell! Anyway all this was about when Tyler started being funny, so I grabbed the script of Zantac yesterday and already today he is so much better.  So I am thinking that the amount of Zantac that goes through to my milk must help him too! The Somac mustn't go through as well and hence why it didn't do anything for him.  So I will be staying on the Zantac if it helps Tyler I don't care about the few hours of pain, its worth it!

On another note I finally got Tyler to take a bottle of EBM today! YAY! So I am going to express a few more times today to see if it was a fluke or not, and hopefully we can get him back to having his 1 bottle a day and this in turn will mean other people can mind him for me whilst I do some exercise or something.  At the moment he feeds too regularly to leave him :(

Christmas tomorrow! YAY.  Tyler's first one! he is a little too young to realise what is going on but thats OK.  I have spoilt him of course! hehe :) Hopefully the weather is cool again tomorrow as he definitely copes better in this weather.

Something else I have figured out, I can get Tyler down in his cot easily for his first sleep cycle.  The battle comes when I try and put him back down for round 2!! he wont have a bar of it! So this afternoon I picked him straight up after the first cycle, patted him back to a light sleep, popped him in his bassinet and he has been down now for another 40mins! :)

Well better finish getting the stuff together to take to Nanna's this afternoon so I don't have to kart it all around tomorrow!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! :)
